Bladder Health and Interstitial Cystitis (IC)
Interstitial Cystitis (IC) – or painful bladder syndrome (PBS) – is a chronic, inflammatory condition of the bladder, which results in recurring discomfort or pain in the bladder and surrounding pelvic region. Symptoms also include frequent and urgent urination, and pain during sexual intercourse.
Although men can develop IC, it is far more common among women.10 In fact, of the estimated 1.3 million Americans with IC, more than 1.2 million are women.11 The onset of IC usually occurs between 30 and 70 years of age, with a median age of 43.12 The prevalence of the disease appears to be increasing among young and middle-aged women.13
While much about IC remains unknown, there are available treatment options that may help.
