Our History

Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc., is built on a rich history of innovation and firmly grounded in science, a common theme among the various Ortho-McNeil-Janssen Pharmaceutical operating units that united under the Janssen name in June, 2011. These companies – McNeil Pediatrics, Ortho-McNeil, Ortho Women’s Health & Urology, Ortho-McNeil Neurologics, PriCara, and Janssen (which previously focused solely on mental health) – are now an integrated group with increased capabilities to enhance resources and focus on product innovation, customer service, and organizational excellence.

While formerly focused on distinct therapeutic areas, each operating unit held innovation as a foremost approach to meeting customer needs. This passion and commitment has penetrated our company in many ways – from internal and external partnering approaches by our R&D sister company to ensure the best in research and drug discovery, to offering novel treatment options, to maintaining strong corporate citizenship in the communities in which we work and live. Together, we draw from each company’s unique heritage while sharing a unified mission of helping people live healthy lives.

Our history and foundational values provide us strength as we look toward the future. In fact, the company’s namesake, Dr. Paul Janssen, had a vision that still applies in the 21ST century. “There are still many diseases for which there is no cure, and effective drugs must be found. Although we have contributed to the solutions for some of these problems, we will continue our research efforts, because so much more needs to be done.”
